Playa Jardín, located in the north of Tenerife, hailed a popular British tourist hotspot is renowned for its beauty and breathtaking views of Mount Teide.

However, this paradisiacal beach has been closed “indefinitely” to visitors due to being contaminated with wastewater.

According to Express.co.uk, the beach’s swimming ban dates back to July and it does not look like it is going to be lifted anytime soon, with local authorities stating “This decision will be extended indefinitely and is a measure in response to the decline in water quality that has been occurring at least since 2016 in the Playa Jardín area and, above all, in this last year 2024."

Further warning of the great health risks associated with swimming at Playa Jardín, “There is epidemiological evidence that this situation can cause gastrointestinal symptoms due to ingestion of water, as well as other types of conditions such as acute respiratory infections and infections of the ears, eyes, nasal passages, and skin.”

In addition to this, it was announced that the council will increase water quality testing and that the ban will only be lifted once the water quality improves sufficiently.

Various warning signs educating visitors of the risk of infection and gastrointestinal disease are now all that is left at this once bustling beach.
