"My deepest condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives as a result of the devastating rains and floods in Spain, and my total solidarity with the Spanish Government and people", wrote António Guterres, in a message published on X.
"We are ready to provide all possible support if necessary," he said.
The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, had previously stated, through social media, that he received messages of solidarity from Guterres and the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von der Leyen, as well as other international leaders, with whom he spoke by phone.
The president of the Spanish executive thanked them for their solidarity and empathy towards the Spanish people.
“Our country is more accompanied today than ever before”, highlighted Sánchez.
Von der Leyen also reported the conversation with Sánchez on her profile on the social network X and assured that the floods in Spain “are not just a national tragedy”.
“They are also a European [tragedy]. As such, it will have a European response. We are ready to support you with emergency goods. When the time comes, we can also help you rebuild”, said the head of the European Commission.
At least 95 people died in Spain because of the torrential rains and floods that hit the east and south of the country last night, according to the authorities' most recent report.
The previous balance was 72 deaths in the Valencian Community and Castile La Mancha regions.
The Valencian Community was the most affected by the storm and the regional government has so far confirmed 92 deaths, in a report that remains provisional.
