The Spanish National Police made a record cocaine seizure after finding around 13 tons of the drug hidden in a shipment of bananas in a container at the port of Algeciras, in southern Spain.

According to the local press, the discovery took place on October 14th and the cocaine was hidden in a container coming from Ecuador.

"It's obvious that these 13 tons of cocaine were not just destined for the Spanish market. The Spanish market cannot handle so much drug at once. This drug was destined to be distributed throughout Europe," said Antonio Jesus Martinez, chief of the Central Narcotics Brigade of the National Police, in a press conference.

This seizure beats the previous record in Spain, which occurred in 2023, when 9.4 tons of cocaine were also found in the port of Algeciras.

According to Martinez, Spanish authorities were on alert following a tip from Ecuadorian colleagues reporting suspicious cargo on its way to Spain.

A woman, a partner in the company responsible for receiving the shipment of bananas, was arrested, while two other men are at large.
