Braintrust's “Tourism Barometer” predicts a significant increase in the arrival of international tourists to Spain in the coming years. The consultancy firm states that it expects sustained growth in foreign tourism over time, positioning Spain as the leading market for international travellers in the coming decades, reaching 115 million travellers by around 2040, which places it at the top of the podium as the leading tourist receiving market in the world, ahead of France.
With a forecast of more than 91 million international tourists for this year, and spending in the order of 125 billion euros, calculations indicate that these figures will be significantly exceeded in the coming years. The international context, the evolution of the economy and the actions carried out by the different destinations may influence the continuation of record-breaking not only in terms of numbers but also in terms of spending, together with the promotion that Turespaña is carrying out abroad.
In fact, the autonomous communities and municipalities of Spain are increasingly updating and planning their tourism policies with a view to growth, with the national share of tourism expected to exceed 15% in the coming decades, a figure that is already exceeded in communities such as the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands.
Some places, such as emerging destinations, will seek quantity and others, such as mature destinations, will seek quality, since this tourism industry represents a large part of the GDP of the different territories, as shown in the map drawn up by Braintrust.
Ángel García Butragueño, Director of Tourism at Brantrust, stresses that tourism “has once again proven to be the country’s economic engine, with overwhelming strength and resilience that are worthy of praise, and whose importance will increase in the future thanks to its extraordinary value proposition”.
