In a statement, the European Commission announced that the money comes from the European Union (EU) Solidarity Fund and that the 100 million euros is the “maximum amount allowed” under this fund that can be advanced to a country in the political-economic bloc.
Spain requested this support in January 2025, following the storm that struck in October last year.
The European Commission is still evaluating Madrid's request, and as soon as this verification is finalised, Ursula von der Leyen's executive will “present a proposal for the total amount to be guaranteed by the EU Solidarity Fund.”
