The government approved a proposal to assume €83.252 billion of the autonomous regions' public debt and thus fulfill agreements with the Catalan independence movement that made the current legislative term possible.
The majority of Spain's 17 autonomous regions—the 11 governed by the right-wing Popular Party (PP)—reject the proposal, arguing that it is yet another concession to the Catalan independence movement, with the sole aim of keeping Sánchez in power and solving a problem for Catalonia, without truly benefiting the other communities.
