If the limit is finally lowered to 0.2 grams of alcohol in the blood, Spain will be one of the most restrictive countries in Europe regarding alcohol levels at the wheel.
The Government is studying a strong reduction in the blood alcohol level that drivers can have in Spain.
Specifically, to date, the maximum permitted rate is 0.5 grams of alcohol per liter of blood.
The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, has announced that they are studying reducing the rate from 0.5 grams of alcohol per liter to a new rate of 0.2 grams of alcohol per liter as maximum.
If this new limit is implemented, Spain would be one of the European countries with the lowest maximum alcohol rate.
Only Estonia, Norway, Poland and Sweden have a rate similar to the one that Spain wants to impose of 0.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood.
With an even tougher rate would be the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, which do not allow a single gram while driving.
On the other hand, neighbouring countries, such as France, Germany or Portugal, remain at 0.5 grams per litre of blood, that is, a higher rate than the one that Spain wants to impose, as shown in this table.
