In the "I am a scientist. I live in your neighbourhood" campaign, eleven female researchers from the University of Zaragoza participated: experts in engineering, biochemistry, and philology. This initiative continues this year intending to encourage more girls to enter science and research, thus closing the gender gap. At the University of Zaragoza, women already constitute 48% of the research teams. These researchers are also the focus of an exhibition currently displayed on Gran Vía in Zaragoza.
One of the members, a mathematician by the name of Beatriz Rubio, participated in a breakfast event with 5th-grade students to inspire girls to take up science and research careers. She has published her work on computer-aided geometric design for aeronautics, automobiles, and 3D animation among others besides writing theorems to increase the precision of algorithms in linear algebra.
During the event, Claudia Pérez Forniés announced that her department would launch two new funding calls shortly to support research and its practical applications in the business sector, with a total allocation of 2.5 million euros. One, which will be released for one million euros, will hire fifteen transfer agents who will assist the researchers in transferring their knowledge to businesses. The other financing source totalled one and a half million euros, which would be allocated to 19 post-doctoral contracts for researchers.
The minister also called for research grants to be launched, in which she said it demonstrated commitment to women scientists. Right now, women occupy the position of principal investigator for 40% of the projects, and 80% of the projects deal with scientific disciplines.
